I have noticed that setting Enabled=false does not grey out the VirtualTree like a textbox greys out.

Is there an eay way to accomplish the same look. I tried setting the Background color to grey and that didn't appear to do it.

The BackColor will set the default color of the column and row header buttons. To change the background color for the row area you need to set the RowStyle.BackColor.
