Moin,

I'd like to see the license file to be encrypted. Currently one can see the Computer-ID in clear text. If a license file is spread around it is easy to make the protected software running with the key, which would be harder if the Computer-ID would be encrypted. It would add an additional small barrier. Does it make sense ?

If the computer name doesn't match the name in the license file then an error message is displayed that includes the name of the computer that the license file is for. This is so that if a customer inadvertantly changes the name of the computer or reinstalls their OS they can fix it so the their licenses will still work. So encrypting the file won't really help. It does of course open the possibility of someone who shouldn't renaming a computer to get a license file to work.

The default authentication mechanism which locks to the machine name is a compromise between security and customer satisfaction. Our experience with other license activation systems, that lock to hardware characteristics, is that they are very frustrating for customers and the source of a lot of support work for vendors. With the default mechanism customers have the security of knowing that they can always get their license working - if even they have to reinstall the OS or change machine hardware. See the following FAQ for more detail on the factors behind the design of the default authentication mechanism:

If you want more certaintly that users can't abuse the authentication you can change the authentication mechanism to lock to hardware characteristics - but we don't believe this is generally a good option. See the following FAQ for details:
