Web applications are different to windows forms applications because they often they run under very limited (partial trust) permissions. This can mean that the standard RegistryEvaluationMonitor class will not work (as it requires write permission to some part of the registry). Even the IsolatedStorageEvaluationMonitor class may not work if the web host has disabled access to isolated storage.
So for a web app the best approach for evaluations may not be to time limit them – but to instead disable some functionality or display nag screens when running in evaluation mode (ie with no license installed).
Another alternative is to issue evaluation license keys which include an expiry date. There is no real value in this unless you can ensure that someone can't just request and receive another evaluation key when their evaluation expires. Requiring evaluating customers to go through a regsitration process to receive a license key can also be a disincentive to them evaluating your software and they may just move onto the next product which doesn't have this barrier. _________________ Infralution Support |
