One thing I've learnt while selling software is the need to unlock a roomful of stations in one go. One big sale is much easier to close than 100 small ones...

Is there a way to point stations to a common pool of licenses?

Eg: sell 100 stations worth of X, and script their install so that the rollout ends up checking Y network dir for a valid group license for 100 stations...

Better yet...A slow *rotating* 'pool' of licenses. Although 100 licenses should unlock only 100 stations...sometimes theres a need to be more flexible...a rotating pool where stations pull out licenses but if not checked in with eg 1 week, they are allowed to be transfered to a new station (travelling laptops often rear this problem)

Does your system allow for central repository of licenses -- if not, do you think it could be extended relatively easily to allow for this?

We don't directly support a network licensing solution. This is because there are so many different ways to implement this - and no one solution will be right for everyone. These types of solutions typically require a license server running on a central server. The applications that are best suited to this type of licensing also typically use a central server for communication and data access. So in many cases it is better to simply combine the licensing function into the main application server.

It is relatively simple to extend ILS to support this type of licensing. You would use ILS as your license key generation/validation mechanism and include the number of floating licenses in the ProductInfo of the license key. Then build your own license server (or incorporate this into your application server) that maintains the active license count and accepts/denies license requests from clients.
