You can't just set the alpha of the SelectedStyle.BackColor because the selected style backcolor is not applied over the row backcolor (it replaces it).

Once you change the selection color like this you no longer have standard highlight colors - so you might as well just set the standard RowSelectedStyle.BackColor to Blue and not use the system hightlight color. You could of course calculate the color on the fly by averaging the RGB values of your highlight color and back color.

Changing these properties on the fly like this may well work - but it seems a little clunk. The alternative would be to create a custom RowWidget and override the PaintBackground method to fill the background using your desired color. But if changing the properties on the fly works for you then it is probably simpler.
