If you have noticed that the AuthenticateFile.aspx page used by customers to authenticate licenses offline has suddenly started hanging here is the reason why.

On 8 July 2014 Microsoft released a security update (MS14-037) for Internet Explorer 9 to 11:

Among the known issues from this security update are:

Issue 3: After you install this security update, Internet Explorer may become unresponsive in some applications when web forms are being used or when files are being uploaded. This issue affects Internet Explorer versions 10 and 11.


Unfortunately this bug affects the download of the authenticated license file and causes the page to hang. This page uses standard ASP.NET code to download the file which unfortunately Microsoft appear to have broken in this security update.

You can check if your web browser is using this update by clicking the "About Internet Explorer" menu from the toolbar and looking at the Update Versions. If this says 11.0.10 (KB2962872) then you have the security update installed.

As yet we have been unable to find any way to work around this bug in Internet Explorer. We are hoping that Microsoft will quickly fix this issue. In the meantime your customers can use another browser (Chrome works well) or alternatively email you the license file to authenticate using License Tracker.

Update: Here is a bug report on Microsoft Connect about the issue:

From the description the bug is only evident when a file is submitted and a file is returned in the same post (which is the case for license authentication).

If you are a Connect member and are experiencing the issue then I suggest that you click the "I can too" link to let Microsoft know that you can reproduce the problem and it is affecting more then just a few people.

Update: This bug in Internet Explorer appears to have been fixed in the latest round of updates from Microsoft. So if customers are having this problem ensure that they have Windows Updates turned on and have installed the recommended updates. The fixed version of Internet Explorer 11 is Update Version 11.0.12
