We run our own mailserver on a VPS and want to use the smtp server in combination with Indralution IPN.net.
I have it working on test domain with PayPal Sandbox. On the server we have a SSL certificate and are using SSL for all of our mail accounts.

But if I set the "SmtpUseSSL" on I get a Time out on from the SendEmail methode.

I use the same properties as I do in my Outlook configuration:
Servername: mail.xxxx.nl
Username: xxxxx
Portnumber 465
SmtpUseSSL = true

Or are I being paranoid and can we safely use our smtp server without SSL?

If the webserver and your SMTP server reside on the same machine or domain then there is little likelihood of your messages being intercepted so I don't see much risk in not using SSL.
