By default AuthenticatedLicenses are locked to the name of the computer on which they are installed. This means that the user is able to change hardware, reinstall their operating system or even install a new operating system without invalidating their license. Since most users would be unwilling (or unable when the machines are in a network) to change the computer name to match a license key it also provides a good deterrent to key sharing. See How is Authentication different to other Activation schemes? for more information.
You can however easily change this behaviour so that licenses are locked instead to some other hardware characteristics (eg Hard Disk ID or MAC address). To change the behaviour simply derive a new class from AuthenticatedLicenseProvider and override the GetComputerID method to return a string based on the characteristics you want to lock to.
If you want to lock to several different hardware components you can return a string composed of the each of them. You can then override the IsThisComputer method to check that at least one of the components still matches. This would provide some resilience to hardware changes. _________________ Infralution Support |
