How is Globalizer.NET different to other localization tools?

Globalizer.NET was designed from the ground up to work with Microsoft's .NET platform. This integration with .NET is not just an add-on, bolted onto a generic localization tool. This means that Globalizer.NET is able leverage some of the unique capabilities of the .NET platform to simplify the translation process.

A major issue when localizing .NET applications is the turn around time between translator and developer. Typically the developer sends the translator the resource items to be translated, the translator translates them and sends them back to the developer who then builds a new version of the application that includes the localized resource assemblies. The developer then sends the translator the new localized version of the application to verify. The problem with this approach is that the translator has to wait until the developer has done a new build to see how their translations work in the real application. Globalizer.NET addresses this issue in two ways:

Form/Control Preview. The preview mechanism allows the translator to select an application form or control within Globalizer.NET and display it in any chosen language.

Deployed Localization. Deployed Localization allows the translator to build the actual localized satellite resources and then run the fully localized application. The translator can fully test their translations without the turnaround time of the traditional translation process, improving both the quality of the translation and the time to market for your application.

Infralution Globalizer.NET provides a complete solution for localizing software built using Microsoft's .NET development platform.

Globalizer.NET Features
  • ASP.NET and Windows Forms Localization - Globalizer.NET can be used to localize ASP.NET and Windows Forms applications and components written in Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 using C#, VB.NET and C++.
  • Windows Installer (MSI) Localization - Globalizer.NET can localize the Windows Installer (MSI) files generated by Visual Studio and other tools, into any language (not just the few supported by Visual Studio). Globalizer.NET automatically builds multi-lingual MSI files - so you can build and deploy a single Setup MSI that automatically selects the language to use based on the users locale.
  • XML File Localization - Globalizer.NET provides a powerful and flexible mechanism for scanning and translating strings from external XML files that your application uses.
  • Project/Solution Scanning - automatically scan Visual Studio Projects and Solutions for resources to translate
  • Source Code Localization - Globalizer.NET can generate the language specific resource (resx) files for your application and automatically add these into your Visual Studio projects. You can then edit and build your localized application using Visual Studio.
  • Deployed (Binary) Localization - build the satellite assemblies (that contain language specific resources) for your application directly using Globalizer.NET. Developers can use this to build localized versions of an application without having to modify the Visual Studio project. Translators can use this mechanism to build and test localized versions of your application without them requiring access to your source code or needing to purchase and use Visual Studio.
  • Free Translator Edition - Translators can install and use the free Translators Edition of Globalizer.NET to translate your applications at no additional cost to you.
  • Powerful Command Line Interface - allows you to integrate Globalizer.NET directly into your build process.
  • Localized Application Start - test your localized Application directly from Globalizer.NET using a selected locale without having to use the Control Panel to set the locale
  • Preview Mechanism - allows Translators to preview application forms and controls directly from within Globalizer.NET.
  • Scan Filters - allow you to include/exclude items to scan using regular expressions based on either resource type and/or context
  • Detection of non-localizable forms - the scanning process detects forms and controls within the application project that have not been marked as localizable and issues a warning.
  • Status Management - Globalizer.NET automatically flags translation items that have changed, added or are no longer used when scanning or importing. This allows you and your translators to quickly focus on the items that require attention.
  • Import/Export Mechanism - allows you exchange translation items with your translators and to reuse translations from other projects
  • TMX Import/Export - supports importing and exporting industry standard Translation Memory eXchange (TMX) format files to allow interoperability with other Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tools
  • Single Editor View - see and edit all languages for all translation items in one view
  • Duplicate String Translation - automatically translate duplicate strings
  • Lock/Unlock Translations - lock selected translation items to prevent them being exported to the translator
  • Display Filters - filter and sort the displayed translations based on a variety of criteria
  • Support for Typed Resources - Icons, Bitmaps, Locations, Sizes and other typed resources can be translated using Globalizer.NET. The editor understands typed resources and allows you to edit them in a manner similar to Visual Studio's property window.
  • XML or Compressed Workspace Files - workspace files can be saved in either XML format or a compressed binary format. The XML format is designed for compatibility with version control systems such as CVS and SVN. Both formats can save and load very large workspaces very quickly (a workspace with around 8000 translation items and 30000 translations loads in under 2 seconds on typical hardware)
  • Localized Editor Versions - the Globalizer.NET editor itself currently has English and French localizations - simply change your windows locale. We offer discounts to customers who assist with localizing Globalizer.NET into other languages.
  • Flexible Licensing - Infralution offers licenses that match your needs, with the ability to upgrade as your application grows:
    • Basic - allows translation of up to 1000 items per workspace
    • Standard - allows translation of up to 5000 items per workspace
    • Pro - unlimited number of translations per workspace

Why do I need a localization tool?

Visual Studio is an excellent development environment, however it is not optimized for the task of translating.

Typically a Visual Studio project may contain hundreds of localizable resource files - many of them containing similar text. Managing all of these files, ensuring consistency, and handling the interaction with external translators (who may have little or no technical experience) is a daunting task.

Globalizer.NET can help you tame the complexities of localization!

Prior to Globaliser.NET our translation process was slow and complicated. Globalizer.NET has allowed us to spend less time on managing translation issues and more time on what really counts to our customers.

Globaliser.NET's unique ability to allow translators to preview the localized forms and build and run the localized application, all from the translation tool, means translations are usually right the first time.
